Narrative: This entry is part of the “Did You Know?” series. Sometimes the most important support programs are the ones people do not realize exist. If food bought with SNAP benefits is lost because of a fire, flood, power outage, broken refrigerator or freezer, or another disaster, there may be a way to ask for replacement benefits. This kind of information matters because emergencies are already stressful enough without also losing a month’s worth of food.

Did you know that if you lose food you bought with SNAP benefits because of a household disaster, Massachusetts may be able to replace some of those benefits?

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, SNAP benefits may be replaced when food is lost because of a fire, flood, loss of electricity, a broken refrigerator or freezer, or another household misfortune. The most that can be replaced is up to one month of SNAP benefits, and the loss must be reported within 10 days.

That deadline is important. A lot of people do not know this rule exists, and by the time they find out, the reporting window may already be closing. When you are dealing with spoiled food, emergency stress, and the cost of replacing groceries, it can be easy to assume there are no options. But there may be.

Massachusetts says you can report the loss by phone or in writing. That means if your SNAP food was destroyed during a household emergency, it is worth acting quickly and contacting DTA as soon as possible.

The big takeaway here is simple: if your food was lost because of a disaster or household misfortune, do not assume the benefits are gone for good. You may be able to request replacement SNAP benefits, but timing matters, and you only have 10 days after the loss to report it.

Knowing your options does not erase the hardship, but it can make the next step a little easier.

The official Mass.gov SNAP Household Misfortune page says replacement benefits may be available for food lost due to fire, flood, power loss, broken refrigeration, or other disaster, with a limit of one month of SNAP and a 10-day reporting deadline.
